Initial E-Ink Optimizations

We’re excited to announce a highly requested update for our Android app! This has been on our radar for over three years, and after a complete overhaul of our Android app, we can now start delivering the improvements you’ve been asking for. Thank you for your patience!

We’ve introduced several performance enhancements specifically for e-ink devices, catering to all devices from budget to high-end models.

Key Enhancements:

  • High Contrast Control: Adjust the app’s contrast via Main Menu → Settings → Appearance to suit your reading preferences on e-ink screens.
  • Improved Page Rendering: For reflowable EPUBs, page turning now fully renders without partial page issues. Page rendering is also smoother for PDFs & fixed layout EPUBs.
  • Page Animation Settings: Added new controls to customize page animations for a smoother experience.
  • Enhanced UI Interactions: Fine-tuned settings within the reader for a more responsive experience.
  • Better Highlighting & Note-Taking: Improved precision and fluidity when writing, highlighting, or adding notes.
  • Updated Bookmark Button: Simplified and optimized for e-ink displays.
  • Refined Main Menu & Text Fields: Made UI adjustments for easier navigation and better interaction with text fields.
  • Margin Icons for E-Ink Screens: Icons for margin settings have been optimized for better visibility on e-ink devices.

This is just the start of our e-ink optimizations! We’ll also be focusing on improving the experience on the bookshelf in the next update. If you notice any areas within the reader that need more attention or have suggestions for bookshelf enhancements, please let us know!

Below are some early rough snapshots of the app in action on a Boox and Supernote device. Stay tuned for more details, e-ink devices and updates in the next release!

Bug Fixes:

  • Resolved an issue where links in reflowable EPUBs were not working.
  • Fixed an issue where the legacy UI would blink briefly on app launch.
  • Corrected the ‘vertical scroll mode’ not switching modes.
  • Several other bugs that previously caused crashes have been addressed.

What’s Next?

Our next update will deliver the rest of our e-ink optimizations, including improvements to the bookshelf and addressing user-reported feedback. Following that, we will introduce features you’ve requested, such as custom font support, dictionary integration, paragraph spacing, hyphenation, custom tap areas, and more — in no particular order. Stay tuned!
