Scary Reads for Halloween

Halloween is nigh,

So here’re some books to pass the time.

One of terror, another of fright;

Both will give you a fear-filled night!

dracula

Dracula by Bram Stoker

This popular gothic novel has inspired many vampire stories and is a perfect read for Halloween. It’s about Count Dracula, the master vampire, who immigrates to England from Transylvania to prey on the people there and the efforts of those who try to thwart him.

For a modern twist on this vampire tale, take a break from reading and try the horror TV show The Strain, which is based on Guillermo del Toro’s novel of the same name. The show, which airs on NBC, is about a strange virus that infects people in New York City turning them into blood-sucking predators.

The Ghost Pirates by William Hope Hodgson

For those who want a bit more adventure, try Hodgson’s Ghost Pirates, which was first published in 1909. The story is narrated by the only survivor of an ill-fated ship that was destroyed at sea due to paranormal occurrences.

If this book sends a shiver down your spine, take a break to watch The Curse of the Black Pearl, the first of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, fun, fantasy swashbuckling films about the adventures of the pirate Jack Sparrow and his crew and friends. In The Curse of the Black Pearl, a pirate ship suddenly appears off the coast of Port Royal, Jamaica, and its undead crew kidnaps the governor’s daughter, Elizabeth Swann. It’s then up to Jack and his new acquaintance, Will Turner, who cares for Elizabeth, to rescue her.
